Rio Carnival is the largest festival on Earth. For five days every February, Rio de Janeiro becomes the most joyful, most colorful, most alive place on the planet — 2 million people per day fill the streets. Rio Carnival 2027 runs February 12–17.

The Two Carnivals: Sambadrome vs. Street Parties

The Sambadrome Parade is the formal, ticketed competition where Rio's 12 elite samba schools compete over two nights. Each school fields 3,000–5,000 performers in elaborate costumes. The street parties (blocos) are free, informal, and happen throughout the city — over 500 blocos take place during Carnival week.

Pro Tip: Buy Sambadrome tickets as early as possible — the best sectors (Sectors 2, 4, 6, 9, and 11) sell out months in advance. Sector 9 (the judges' sector) offers the best overall view.
